Born in 1985 in Piacenzaen – Italy, Carlo Cafferini fell in love with photography at an early age, travelling in the wake of his uncles in France, Spain and Portugal, always equipped with a film camera. Carlo starts with an rickety old camera and then switches to DSLR. Used to contrasting black and white, The upper city is a series of monochrome photos of rooftops in city.
I have always been fascinated by stark contrasts and extreme monochromes, both lowkey and highkey, at the same time I usually try to capture everyday life with a special consideration for its minimalist and surreal side. The distinguishing element of this series is that the city where it’s located is depicted from an unusual point of view, an unconventional and upper level where no human being can be seen, where only flying animals live and reign, the upper city indeed. This series plays with the urban landscape, presenting it in an unconventional way, giving it an abstract look and making it unrecognisable. It could be my city as well as any other city, although some acute observer could recognize certain elements of the one where the series takes place.

Né en 1985 à Piacenzaen – Italie, Carlo Cafferini tombe amoureux de la photographie assez tôt, voyageant dans le sillage de ses oncles en France, en Espagne et Portugal, toujours équipé d’un appareil photo argentique. Carlo commence avec un vieil appareil photo suranné puis bascule au reflex numérique. Habitué aux noir et blanc contrasté, The upper city est une série de photos monochromes de toits en ville.
J’ai toujours été fasciné par les contrastes frappants et les monochromes extrêmes, à la fois discrets et hauts en couleur, tout en essayant de capturer la vie quotidienne avec une attention particulière pour son côté minimaliste et surréaliste. L’élément distinctif de cette série est que la ville où elle est située est représentée d’un point de vue inhabituel, un niveau supérieur non conventionnel où aucun être humain ne peut être vu, où seuls des animaux volants vivent et règnent, la ville haute en effet. Cette série joue avec le paysage urbain, en le présentant de manière non conventionnelle, en lui donnant un aspect abstrait et en le rendant méconnaissable. Il pourrait s’agir de ma ville comme de toute autre ville, bien que certains observateurs perspicaces puissent reconnaître certains éléments d’où se déroule la série.
